A BALANCE IN TIME

This is a dynamic and balanced fountain whose form is determined by time from months to minutes. The theme of balance is conveyed by the delicate dance of the pieces when they are in line and out of line and the balance of the four elements earth, wind, water, and fire; however, there is a fifth and important element of existence, time. The fountain would be composed of five isosceles triangular pieces, spaced 1” apart, that will represent different measurements of time and will rotate clockwise incrementally. Because of this the fountain will take different form every minute and the pieces will be aligned monthly. The lowest piece is months, the next piece is weeks, then days, hours, and minutes at the top. The fountain sits on a base which would catch the falling water so that the observer would constantly hear the soothing sound of gently splashing water. It houses a pump that will pump water through the central cylinder which then runs out of the hollow steel tube from small rubber hoses and collects in a 2” deep pool on each time piece. The base is designed to emphasize the circular motion of the timepieces through the air. The outermost wall of the base will be a water wall, wet to the touch. A flame will burn at the top of the fountain to emphasize the verticality of the fountain and complete the dramatic dance of the elements.

It took me a little while to warm up to this one, but then i realize i really like how you've abstracted time - a passerby probably wouldnt be able to discern the time from looking at it, but if you stop for even a minute you will see how dynamic this fountain can be, like the payoff of hanging around the fountain in Pershing Square or other places like that...+1 vote Jan 26 2009 | 02:30 am
