MITOSIS

I approached this project as an innovative practical solution relating to small spaces. Depending on where you reside for instance, dorm room, high rise apartment, store, or office, storage space and furniture is an issue. I wanted to create something that could be used in commercial, residential, and retail buildings. The theme was balance, so I interpreted that as movable, innovative, and aesthetically pleasing. Similar to the Mitosis process, my product breaks down into many phases that relate to storage, seating, dining, and sculpture. This product is easy to fabricate, pleasing to the eye, movable, and a new way of storage, and furniture, and it comes in all colors just like people. Some say think in and outside of the box, why does it have to be a box, how about a circle? Forget about all that reading, the images and specific words has a meaning related to this project. If you do not understand the words, Google is always open. Enjoy

I understand says:
It took me a while to understand this project and your posted explanations but now I see how it has been envisioned to work. There are basically 2 configurations (3 if you count the different seating arrangements). config 1: Tall unit for storage/sculpture config 2: Separated unit for seating/dining/storage To change from config 1 to config 2 you must slide out the chair units and drop the table unit to the floor. The core of the table has built in doors that swing out for storage (doesn't matter which config state it is in) and the base of the chairs also has this storage space. Apparently the table top is able to slide out to the user so that leg room is created and person can eat or use the table in another manner. The proble: the transformation between these "phases" is not easily done. To do it safely it would require at least two people, more if the storage spaces are filled and certainly not something that every person is capable of doing. In my opinion, two fit adults would be needed to move these pieces. But I guess that is the case with a lot of furniture arranging. Another is the angle of seating. maybe the seating is more comfortable when two chairs are pushed together to form a semicircle but as an individual unit it looks very uncomfortable. To sit, a person's pack would have top press up against the back of the chair which is a sharp 90. There is no room for slouching to a more comfortable angle because the seat is wedged shape. I understand but I don't agree

Nicholas Brown says:
I have never seen that before. It looks ok I guess Bubble Burster, but not that functional in what my project emphasizes. It seems as if that designer was more focused on furniture, this competition is about balance meaning it must incorporate many things, which is not displayed in your search for trying to dismantle my project. Thats like saying a blue bed looks like a red bed only because it is a bed. More goes into a project than the physical masterpiece. The negative and positive comment are part of the game, it comes with the territory. I could have created a product that convert heat into potential energy and would receive the same comments. I could have talked about the Counterpoise project looking like something else, or the LiveWork as well, but us as young designers are trying to created something for the future and I applaud everyone's design, and you should as well. Those designs must be doing something correct, to grab your attention. It is not about bringing all the students projects down, we are trying to make society better through our creative mindset. Lance thanks as well I need some sleep to get ready for my Chuck-E-Cheese party in the morning, and meeting with Dora the Explorer Burster. Have a good one.

Great concept! I love the idea of combining utilitarian furniture and art, especially as we downsize and learn to use our space more efficiently. good attempt at basing a design on a separate and different concept; however, after your explaination I still have a hard time understanding. I think its cool that you use a foreign concept, but for future projects I could recommend that you choose concepts that are more familiar to consumers, especially if the product is for real consumers, as you stated. Otherwise the concept will be lost on them and leave them to judge the product with out the concept and it may come off contrived. Good job though.

Thanks, for all the support and input. I guess I can explain a little more about the product. There was a limit for the concept statement, so I kept it short and to the point. The order of the images did not show up in the way I planned, but I assumed that was going to happen, so I labeled the images with the terms, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase. Those are some phases in Mitosis in that order. I knew that some people would not understand what was going on. That was the whole point. I wanted people to take the initiative in remembering this product by search those terms, or asking question if they did not already know. I wanted to be creative using the Mitosis idea. So, I thought to myself what could make me stand out other than being myself. I was certain that the other contestants would have great renders but what I considered differently than everyone else, was a real process for instance Mitosis. So I applied that metaphorically to my product, which is for real people. This concept divides my product physically and functionally into parts creating balance for everyone. I wanted people to look and imagine the endless possibilities the product has, storage, seating, compact, colors etc, and for more people to start taking the initiative in trying to search for answers in life. If you still do not understand how this is physically possible, I will elaborate. Parts of the center core has a slightly smaller radius than the outer core, which can be seen at the top of the product. When the outer rims of the wall spread out, the smaller core drops to the floor. Forming two large semi-circular chairs with a coffee table in the center. Also remember, that everything has a storage spot. If there were more than two people, the large semi-circular chair splits into two, forming four storage chairs. A circle is a symbol of balance a square is not. I do not want my project in the corner, because it is centerpiece, which relates back to Mitosis process of creating life. In addition, the material of LG Venus Green is not that shinny. It does not look or feel like plastic, so the images displayed are not supposed to look like a piece of shiny plastic. Keep in mind this was based on a real process of life so it should look and function for real people. Guess next time I would spend more time on image presentation. I hope that helps, with some Thanks, for all the support and input. I guess I can explain a little more about the product. Hi Nick, This brings truth to the statement”a mind is a terrible thing to waste”. The concept is unheard of and groundbreaking. To take a beautiful object and make it useful is creativity at its best. For small places, it is excellent. Your design does an excellent job of highlighting storage space; something small places need plenty of, and the simple beauty of design. The only question I have would be about the front of the chairs, would the design maximize both comfort and beauty? Nick, some will like it and some won't, but it is the same for many famous architects. Some designs are applauded, and some aren't. Go For it! Don't be afraid to dream, and dream BIG!

When judging by the merits of the numerous design projects entered I am truly at a loss as to how the top three projects have acquired so many votes! This project is physically different in the various renderings, which i must say are stunning! Watch out, if this trend continues you may find yourself helplessly behind the Sun Dial project. Please keep in mind I am only judging the pool of work, and I am sure you are a talented and passionate designer, it's just that this particular project is lacking.

Richard Orla and why?!? This is a great project and it makes sense to me, and plus thats Nick Brown one of the coolest professionals in the midwest. The metaphoric concept made my day, not only is the architectual pleasing its an art form. The whole idea reminds me of that young Architect Maya Lin that designed the Vietnam Veterns Memorial. Keep it up Nick, the other projects just have a generic feel, this is the only original project/ concept in this competion.

Head on straight says:
I dont understand the interpretation of balance. If there had been some explanation of why you interpreted balance in the way that you did, then your direction would make more sense. You have no demonstration of the manufacturing process, and so your claim that the product is easy to produce has no merit. The similarities to the mitosis process are also cursory and a stretch, at best. You state your project makes maximal use of space, and yet there is nothing else in the common household that fits next to a circle without wasting space. The choice of a circle over an angular shape is meaningless and purposeless and ends up defeating your originally defined intent. Additionally, your implication that if we don't understand your project, then it is because we are ignorant is simply offensive and ignorant in its own right.

Thanks for the response, after looking at the entries with a friend I finally "got" the design. I just think an arrow showing how the chairs come off the top of the table would be nice. That wouldn't be overloading people with info, it would bring clarity. While I may be in the minority of people who "didn't get it" your presentation pages have to be able to stand on their own and explain your designs, and there may be other simpletons out there who had difficulty as well. I don't comment to bring down your design, but because to me critique is the highest form of flattery. It means that someone wants you to succeed.

Thanks for the input Sara, I will clear up some issues for the confused. Mitosis is a breakdown of the cell that is composed of several stages, which are the basics of the project (concept statement). I have a sample of LG Hi-Macs Spectrum (Venus Green), which is crucial in knowing how the material feels, around those PIE Corner Seats (square sample with corners). It would not have been entered in the competition if it was not feasible, or hard to understand, from my understanding I think this project is for LG everyday customers. Maybe you are thinking too much into it. I understand what you are saying, but lets not over whelm everyday people with too much information. That is not the objective of my design. Once again thanks for the input, and I will consider your pervious statement. This is the only message I will respond to, if you or anyone else would like to continue a discussion regarding this product shoot me an email to nmbrown2@illinois.edu I don’t bite unless its food. * Prophase (1) * Metaphase(2) * Anaphase(3) * Telophase(4)

I like the idea, but your slides have me completely confused. The pie-shaped chairs pull away from the center "table" but the table is still a complete cylinder? How is that possible? Also the dimensions in comparison to your figures seem totally off from one slide to the next, are these all supposed to be the same product? Your idea may be great, but I can't tell because I am confused by the renderings. What is the pie piece on top of the table doing in the last slide?? I can't even really comment on the success or failure of your design because I don't even understand what I am looking at. In the future it would be nice to have some arrows or diagrams or text explaining what is happening... either that or choose renderings of your design that more clearly state what we are supposed to be understanding about your design. Also the corners to everything seem so sharp, I would love to see this rendered with a corner radius. Good luck. This could be a nice design, you just need to give your audience the chance to really understand it!
