This is a design for a chair/bench to utilize outdoors next to swimming pools or beaches. The final form itself is suggesting unity and balance formed by two half circles. Inspirations of Chair X came from acrobatic performances of a circus. Two acrobats stabilizing into a moment of “balance” during their performance is also formed by the two mirror image pieces put together forming one symmetry; the Chair X. The two separate pieces are balancing and relying on each other for their weight support. The weight of the chair and users will be evenly distributed throughout the Chair X.

I agree with Hector- all hotels and resorts have staff to clean chairs and maintain the outdoors of a hotel. I think the design succeeds through it's simplicity and the overall cleaness of the lines. Nice work- Jan 27 2009 | 12:46 pm
Hector Silva (Senior in ID) says:
I disagree with the comment below. Yes debris may accumulate but if this design is focus towards being next to swimming pools, there will be someone in charge of cleaning these chairs. Jan 26 2009 | 08:34 pm
Joseph Lee (Jr. ID Program UIUC) says:
I have one concern about your design. There is the possibility that rain, sand and debris will accumulate on the concave surface of the bench, especially if it is used near or around a beach or pool. Users who neglect to clean off the surface of the bench could potentially leave quite a mess for others. Have you considered the inclusion of a system to easily and hygienically remove such contaminants, such as a drain, a number of slits or holes? Jan 26 2009 | 07:27 am
